How the ISML Practice Support Team can assist General Practice

The ISML Practice Support Service can provide information and support by:

  • Providing statistics on workforce shortage.
  • Assisting with the preparation of applications to recruit overseas trained medical practitioners.
  • Assisting regarding Area Of Need applications.
  • Conducting the Illawarra general practice workforce survey.

Have you considered an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander trainee?

The Graduate School of Medicine and Department of Education and Training have partnered with the ISML to provide Illawarra and Shoalhaven general practices with an innovative local workforce solution.

Practices now have an exciting opportuinty to recruit an Aboriginal administration trainee for a 12 month medical reception traineeship. Part time or full time, including mature age, Indigenous trainees have been trained in the first round of the program in April, 2011 leading to a Certificate II in Business Administration (Medical Reception) for employment in Illawarra and Shoalhaven General Practice . Employers can determine the appropriate level of training for their trainee to complete during the traineeship period. Wage subsides of up to $10,000 are available!

A district of workforce shortage, is a geographical area in which the general population's need for health care is not adequately met and the area has a significantly lower number of medical professional services than the national average.

Area of Need

Area of Need is a state run program aimed at reducing the work force shortages in NSW. The program allows the recruitment of qualified overseas trained doctors for area of need positions.
